Artichoke Leaf Extract
In case of bile duct obstruction, allergies to chicory plants, and in case of gallstones, use this drug only under the supervision of a physician.
Commission E has approved the use of artichoke (Cynarascolymus) for liver and gallbladder problems and cases of anorexia, and the plant has been used to treat indigestion.
In several in vivo and in vitro studies, the effects of choleretic, diuretic, laxative, lipid and blood sugar lowering, antioxidant and hepatoprotective artichoke and its effect in reducing the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) have been thoroughly investigated. Is.
The most important active ingredient in artichokes is cinnarine, which is present in all parts of the plant, especially in its leaves, and experts believe that it is responsible for the effects of artichokes in increasing the secretion and discharge of bile (choleretic-cholagogue).
These two effects are very important for liver health because if the bile is not transferred to the gallbladder enough, the risk of liver damage increases.
Cinnapicrine and cesquiterpene lactones have antihypertensive and lipid-lowering effects.
Cinnarine reduces serum cholesterol by increasing the biliary excretion of sterols and increasing the secretion and emptying of bile cholesterol, but requires high doses over a long period of time.
A review of clinical data from 1936 to 1994 showed that artichoke leaf extract (ALE) reduced cholesterol and / or triglyceride levels by approximately 5% to 45%, but did not consider differences between laboratory conditions in different studies.
Artichoke leaf extract prevents atherosclerosis by two mechanisms: inhibition of cholesterol synthesis and inhibition of LDL oxidation
The following are research studies related to the uses of this drug:
A. Indigestion: In a randomized controlled trial (RCT), 247 patients with functional dyspepsia received ALE 320.2 mg three times daily or placebo for 6 weeks.
The results of data analysis of 244 patients (129 in the treatment group and 115 in the placebo group) showed that the overall improvement in symptoms and quality of life in the ALE treatment group was significantly higher than the placebo. (p <0.01)
In an uncontrolled clinical study in 553 patients with nonspecific gastrointestinal upset (dyspepsia, 620-320) mg of standardized artichoke leaf extract three times daily reduced nausea, abdominal pain, constipation and bloating in 70% of patients.
B. IBS: In a 2-month study, 208 patients with IBS who also had indigestion used ALE.
After treatment; Significant reduction in IBS prevalence of 26.4% (p <0.001), patient report of significant conversion of defecation pattern from intermittent diarrhea / constipation to normal (p <0.001), significant reduction in total score of Dyspepsia Index Nepean symptoms 411% (p <0.001) and a significant improvement in the total NDI quality of life score of 20% was observed.
In a follow-up follow-up, a subset of patients with IBS symptoms associated with indigestion syndrome used ALE for 6 weeks.
Data analysis showed a significant reduction in symptom severity and favorable evaluation of overall efficacy by physician and patient. In addition, 96% of patients rated the effect of ALE as better or at least equivalent to previous treatments, and ALE tolerance was very good.
A: Hyperlipidemia and hyperglycemia: 30 male and female patients with type 2 diabetes in the age range of 35-45 years were studied in 2 treatment and control groups for 90 days. The treatment group (15 people) ate wheat biscuits containing 6 grams of artichoke powder as a snack in the morning and 2 at night.
The results of the study showed a significant decrease in fasting blood sugar and postprandial blood sugar, total cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL and a significant increase in HDL in the treatment group. (p <0.01) In another study, 75 patients with mild to moderate hypercholesterolemia who were healthy in other conditions received 1280 mg of standardized artichoke extract daily for 12 weeks.
At the end of the study, plasma total cholesterol decreased by an average of 40.2% in this group, but increased by 12.9% in the placebo group, and this difference between the two groups was statistically significant. In this study, no statistically significant difference was observed between the two groups in terms of LDL, HDL or TG.
The researchers concluded that artichoke leaf extract reduced moderate but desirable total cholesterol. Type 2 diabetes is associated with hyperlipidemia, and conventional blood sugar and lipid-lowering drugs have limited efficacy and significant side effects.
Artichoke leaves have traditionally been used as anti-hyperglycemic and anti-hyperlipidemic drugs, so in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial in patients aged 40-60 years with type 2 diabetes and hypercholesterolemia who were not taking other lipid-lowering drugs.
And were resistant to daily treatment with 2 5 mg glyburide tablets and 2 500 mg metformin tablets; The efficacy and safety of artichoke leafless fiber extract (3 times a day, one 400 mg capsule for 2 months, n = 36) with these drugs were evaluated in comparison with placebo (n = 36).
According to the results of this study, at the end of the study, compared to placebo, artichoke extract significantly reduced total cholesterol and LDL (P = 0.002 and P = 0.04, respectively, but had a significant effect on fasting blood sugar, postprandial blood sugar, It did not have glycosylated hemoglobin, other lipids, SGOT, SGPT and creatinine (P> 0.05).
No side effects were reported in this study. The researchers concluded that the fiber-free extract of artichoke leaf is a safe product for lowering cholesterol but does not improve glycemic control in diabetic patients with hypercholesterolemia. This suggests the involvement of fiber in artichokes to lower blood sugar.
Hyperlipidemia, especially cholesterol, is a universally recognized risk factor for atherosclerosis, a common disease in old age and an important cause of death.
The use of Atromed-B tablets, without the side effects of synthetic lipid-lowering drugs, has a beneficial effect on reducing the risk of atherosclerosis.
D: Antioxidant and liver protector: In vivo, artichoke polyphenolic compounds such as cinnarine, isochlorogenic acid, chlorogenic acid and luteolin-7-o-glucoside, as well as 2 organic acids
(Caffeic acid and kinetic acid); They show significant hepatoprotective activity against CCl4. This protective effect for artichoke extract has also been shown to be related to its antioxidant properties.
