Varicose veins are dilated spiral veins that are commonly seen on the lower extremities.
Risk factors for varicose veins include: chronic cough, constipation, family history of venous disease, female gender, obesity, old age, pregnancy and prolonged standing.
The main pathophysiology of varicose veins is discussed, but genetic predisposition, valve insufficiency, weakened vessel walls, and increased intravenous pressure are involved.
Symptoms of varicose veins include a feeling of heaviness and pain, itching or burning, and worsening of symptoms following prolonged standing. Potential complications of varicose veins include infection, leg ulcers, changes in blood flow (stasis), and thrombosis.
Some common treatment options include avoiding prolonged standing and fatigue, holding the affected limb high, exercising, applying external pressure, medical treatment, modulating cardiovascular risk factors, reducing peripheral inflammation, and losing weight.
However, there are more invasive treatments such as laser, sclerotherapy and surgery. The choice of treatment depends on several factors, including the patient’s symptoms, patient preference, cost, and physician skills.
Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is mainly due to venous hypertension and secondary capillary to venous return disorder that causes persistent and chronic venous stasis in the skin of the lower extremities that manifests itself as the condition changes.
In the study of the effect of grape seed extract on capillary resistance disorders in patients with hypertension and diabetes, the amount of 150 mg of grape seed extract per day was well tolerated and capillary resistance was significantly improved. p <0.0005) and (p <0.005.
In an open-label study to evaluate the initial safety and tolerance of chestnut in the treatment of chronic venous insufficiency, patients took one 50 mg tablet of chestnut twice a day for 8 weeks.
At the second and third visits, patients reported good and relatively good tolerance to the drug (90% and 95% of cases, respectively).
