1. Thyme:

Commission E has approved the use of thyme for the treatment of cough and bronchitis. Thymol and carvacrol have been shown to have a wide range of effects against bacteria involved in upper respiratory tract infections. Thymol and carvacrol are believed to exert their antibacterial activity by forming complexes with bacterial membrane proteins. A synergistic effect has also been identified for the combination of thymol and carvacrol. In addition, adequate doses of thymol and carvacrol have a tracheal relaxation effect. Various trials have confirmed the effect of thyme on productive cough. In a randomized, uninformed bilateral study, 60 patients with whooping cough received thyme or bromhexine syrup for a period of 5 days. According to the patient's symptoms, there was no significant difference between the two groups, and both groups received the same benefit from taking the drug. Significant non-statistical improvement was observed in the recovery rate of non-smokers compared to smokers in both groups.
On the antibacterial effect of Zataria multiflora essential oil against standard strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis and Bacillus cereus; This essential oil has been shown to have good antibacterial effects against these microorganisms. MIC values were reported from 0.39 mg / mL to 1.56 mg / ml and Staphylococcus aureus was more sensitive than other bacteria (0.39 mg / mL). Streptococcus pyogenes (1.56 mg / mL) and Proteus mirabilis (1.56 mg / mL) were the most resistant bacteria. In the case of Streptococcus pneumoniae, Escherichia coli and Bacillus cereus, a similar MIC of 0.78 mg / mL was found.

In the study of chemical compounds and anti-staphylococcal activity of Zataria multiflora essential oil and its synergistic effect with vancomycin; It is known that the main components of this essential oil; Thymol (38.7%), carvacrol (15.3%) and (10.2%) are r-cymene, and its MIC and MBC are resistant to methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from bed 0, respectively. 1-25 and 2.5-2 μl / ml were reported and the essential oil showed a synergistic effect with vancomycin. The researchers concluded that Zataria multiflora essential oil may be useful in controlling infection caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

2. Fennel:
Commission E has approved the use of fennel to treat inflammation of the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract. Fennel is an expectorant and increases the mucosal activity of the ciliated epithelium of the respiratory tract. The chemical structure of anethole in fennel is similar to that of catecholamines (adrenaline, noradrenaline, and dopamine), and like adrenaline, fennel is a bronchodilator. In guinea pigs; Administration of fennel essential oil in the form of incense has a mild anti-tussive or cough suppressant effect on coughs caused by mechanical stimuli. The antibacterial activity of fennel essential oil has been determined to be equal to or greater than that of streptopenicillin, penicillin and tetracycline antibiotics.

3. Thyme and fennel:

In order to study the effects of thyme and fennel essential oil in the treatment of cough; In a randomized controlled double-blind clinical trial, 119 patients over 14 years of age with acute cough; Three times a day, each time they used 20 drops of tosivin (containing sweet fennel essential oil and thyme essential oil) or clobutinol drops or placebo for 3 days. At the end of this period, complete recovery was reported in the group using tocivin and clobutinol drops, 50% and in the placebo group, 9.1%. The efficacy of tocivin drops, clobutinol drops and placebo drops in patients with sputum cough was 66.7%, 55% and 14.3%, respectively, and in patients with dry cough were 56.5%, 55% and 20%, respectively. In the improvement of cough, a significant difference was observed between tocivin drops and clobutinol drops with placebo (p <0.01) but there was no significant difference between tocivin drops and clobutinol drops (p> 0.4).
In the other two-way uninformed controlled trial; 62 patients with acute cough were randomly divided into two groups of soft thymogel capsules (containing sweet fennel essential oil and thyme essential oil) or placebo to take one soft capsule every 8 hours for 3 days. After re-evaluating patients and collecting information; The rate of improvement was calculated and Chi-square and Fisher's exact tests were used to compare the treatment groups. The results of this study showed that after 72 hours; Complete cessation of cough occurred in 62.5% of patients in the thymogel soft capsule group and in 20% of patients in the placebo group (P = 0.008). Due to the laxative effects of fennel, cough relief with the help of sputum excretion is one of the features of Timogel soft capsule.
